This lung tip has the typical appearance of consolidation from EP, though it is likely that some other bacteria are also involved.

Commercially, herds will either vaccinate for this disease or they will have eradicated it, and will test regularly to prove they are free from it. Many smallholders also vaccinate for this disease, especially those taking pigs to show. The disease spreads through direct contact or from pigs sharing the same airspace, so infection at shows is likely.

Actinobacillus Pleuroneumoniae (APP)

APP is a bacteria that causes catastrophic clinical signs, very suddenly in growing pigs (post-weaning). It doesn’t need viruses to spark infection, but the disease can be more severe where other pathogens are present. Pigs will struggle to breathe, appear dull, have a high fever (40.5°C), and stop eating. Some may suddenly die. A less acute form can be less severe. There is an effective vaccination against this disease.
